LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the fourth straight year. The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
"I am proud to say that we have won this award for four consecutive years," said head coach Reed Sunahara. "Our student-athletes continue to strive for excellence on the court and in the classroom. This award is validation of their hard work and passion."
A record 353 high school and college teams were honored as 70 NCAA Division I teams earned the award, surpassing the mark of 56 set a year ago. In total, 212 collegiate programs met the requirements for the award in 2007-08. Last month, UC had six volleyball players named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2007-08 season.
Cincinnati opens the 2008 season on Aug. 23 with its annual alumni match, slated for 7:30 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena. The regular season gets underway on Aug. 29 when UC hosts the sixth annual State Farm/Vernon Manor Bearcats Invitational. The three-day tournament features Wright State, Tennessee Tech and Marshall.
