"It's a dream come true. It's so exciting," Thompson told TeamUSA.org following the match. "I don't think it's really set in yet, but it's just such an incredible feeling."
GOLD FOR THE GOAT 🥇

Congratulations to former @GoBearcatsVB star @jtomm19 and Team USA! It's the first gold medal in American women's volleyball history.#Bearcats | #OlympiansMadeHere pic.twitter.com/QiNJChyKNx
Team USA defeated Brazil in strong fashion Sunday morning, sweeping them 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) to earn their first ever gold medal.
Third time was the charm as Team USA faced Brazil in the gold medal match during both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympic Games, losing 3-1 both times and bringing home the silver medal. The match-up of both teams in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games was highly anticipated, and the game did not disappoint for the U.S.
Ladies and gentlemen: the G🥇LDEN GIRLS.

(And there's nobody on the team named Blanche.)
Congrats to the 🇺🇸 women for winning their first-ever indoor volleyball Olympic gold. Your schools are VERY proud!#OlympiansMadeHere I #GoTeamUSA pic.twitter.com/rxogYRTPLw
Thompson did not see any action on the court and hasn't played in the last four games due to an ankle injury she suffered during the match against the ROC on July 30, 2021.
Thompson was off to a strong start in her first three Olympic matches before suffering the ankle injury. She led the U.S. Women's National Team with 18 points in their 3-2 win over Turkey. She broke an American record and tied for third on the Olympic scoring record list with her 34 points in the 3-0 win over China. She was also the team's leading scorer in its first Olympic match against Argentina with 20 points on 18 kills.
"I am so incredibly proud of Jordan," said Coach Alvey following the game. "Obviously she was a huge part of getting Team USA to the gold medal match, there's no doubt about that. I think there will be so much more of Jordan Thompson to be seen in the international spotlight. I am so excited she is able to bring home Team USA's first ever gold medal"
Thompson is now the sixth Bearcat to earn a gold medal and the second Bearcat from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Vanessa Gilles and Team Canada won their first gold medal Friday, August 6th when they beat Sweden in the women's soccer gold medal game. They join track and field athletes Mary Wineberg (2008) and Jennifer Kamp (1972), as well as George Wilson (1964) and Oscar Robertson (1960) from the men's basketball program.
"I just knew, whatever my role was - whether I was able to get on the court and get healthy enough to do that, or if that was or being a support teammate on the bench - I just wanted to crush my role. And so, I wanted to be really good eyes for Annie, and bring a lot of energy in the box and just encouraged my teammates in any way that I could. And I hope I did a good job of that." - Jordan Thompson to Team USA/@OMHPMH
Thompson has been a member of the U.S. Women's National Team since 2019 and was recently with Team USA for a win in the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy.
She started her professional career in Turkey in 2020 after a stellar career at UC where she was the AVCA Player of the Year and First Team All-American in 2019. Thompson set Cincinnati's school record with 827 kills during 2018 season and her 6.27 kills per set broke the NCAA record.
Thompson set the NCAA rally-scoring record with 50 kills Nov. 3, 2019 vs. Connecticut. She also represented the U.S. on the Women's Collegiate National Team in 2016 and 2017.
Thompson and the U.S. squad will be back in action on tomorrow night when they face Russia at 10:05 p.m. ET. The match is slated to air on NBC Sports Network and stream through the Peacock App. Check NBCOlympics.com for a complete TV schedule.
