BLACKSBURG, VA.— University of Cincinnati senior Fred Moudani broke the French National and Cincinnati indoor shot put record and senior Tyler Wirth became the first Bearcat to run a sub-4-minute mile on Saturday.
The UC men's and women's track and field teams split squads as the distance squad competed at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., and the sprinters and field athletes competed at the Doc Hale Meet in Blacksburg, Va.
DOC HALE MEET
A native of Savigny-Le-Temple, France, Moudani's shot put throw of 20.51 meters not only broke the UC record but also broke the French national indoor shot put record as well. He broke Yves Niare's 2009 French record of 20.42 meters by .09-meters.
Moudani dominated the shot put event at the Doc Hale Meet as he earned his fourth event win of the season. His throw currently ranks second in the nation, only behind Arizona's Jordan Geist (21.48m) and first in the American Athletic Conference.
Steven McElroy recorded a new personal best in the men's 200-meter dash with his time of 21.33 as he placed second overall in the race. His time is the third fastest in Cincinnati history. McElroy also won the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.86 seconds to complete his weekend in Blacksburg.
Sophomores Annika Kinley and Spirit Morgan claimed the top-tow podium positions in the women's high jump. Kinley tied her personal best mark of 1.81 meters to claim first. Morgan made her Bearcat debut special by placing second with a mark of 1.78m, seventh in UC history.
Also leaping their way into the UC record book was junior Anaya Dees. She recorded new personal best 6.03m in the women's long jump, the third best mark in school history, and placed third second overall in the event.
Sophomore Brandon Johnson moved to up to seventh in UC 60-meter hurdle history after clocking in at 7.99. He placed fourth overall in the event.
MEYO INVITATIONAL
Wirth became the first-ever Bearcat to run a sub-4-minute mile, as he finished with a time of 3:59.89 in the men's mile at the Meyo invitational. He set the UC record last season with a time of 4:00.26 at the Music City Challenge. Wirth currently ranks second in the AAC in the mile.
Junior Matt Hoak won the Ryan Shay 3,000 meter with a time of 8:08.07. Hoak moved to sixth in the UC record book after his performance inside the Loftus Sports Center.
Graduate student Milo Greder and senior Carmen Licht each recorded UC all-time marks in their events. Greder ran in the Meyo mile and crossed the line at the 4:06.87 mark, moving into sixth in UC history. Senior Carmen Licht placed third overall in the women's 800-meter running a personal best time of 2:10.43, the fifth fastest time in school history.
Both the men's and women's DMR teams excelled at the Meyo invitational. The men's DMR team of freshman Seth Elking., sophomore Jack Barchet, junior David Endres and graduate student Jamie Dailey ran the third-fastest DMR in school history with a time of 9:52.12.
The women's DMR team of freshman Gwen Stare, Sarah Madix, senior Maddie Walker and Licht won with the sixth fastest time in UC history, 11:46.01.
