COLUMBUS, Ohio - Annette Echikunwoke continues to make her mark on history for the University of Cincinnati track and field program as her stellar throwing, including one of the longest throws in NCAA history, led the way for the Bearcats Friday night at the Buckeye Tune-Up inside French Fieldhouse in Columbus. Echikunwoke was one of three Bearcats that posted marks on the all-time Top 10 ledger in program history with all three coming in the weight throw event.
// ECHIKUNWOKE MAKING HISTORY
Echikunwoke, who grew up in nearby Pickerington, continued to make history in the weight throw Friday night as the senior became just the second woman in NCAA history to record a mark of 80' or further as she won the event with a best of 24.78m (81-03.75). Not only did her mark improve her previous lifetime best by 3' 5", it also landed her higher up both the NCAA and world all-time ledgers. On the collegiate stage, Echikunwoke now ranks #2 all-time after recording the furthest throw since 2008. Her toss also measures the fourth-longest all-time in the NCAA behind three throws from collegiate record holder Brittany Riley (Southern Illinois). Just the fourth woman to record a 24-meter mark in the event, Echikunwoke is now tied for the #3 position on the all-time world list with Amber Campbell (2/25/12) with only Gwen Berry (25.60m) and Riley (25.56m) ahead of the duo.
Looking back on her career so far, Echikunwoke's first mark as a Bearcat - and her first time competing in the event - measured 17.28m (56-08.50). Flash forward to tonight and Echikunwoke has gone on to improve over that initial mark by 24' 5.25". She will now look to capture her third American Athletic Conference title in a row next weekend in Birmingham, Ala.
// THROWING WEIGHT AROUND
The men's weight throw also produced several big marks for the Bearcats as both Sam Meece and Chris Province posted personal-best marks that rank them among the Top 10 all-time in program history. Meece, in his freshman season, threw the 35-pound implement out to 18.64m (61-02.00) to move up to #3 all-time at UC while also resetting his own freshman school record. Province, a sophomore, moved into the Top 10 for the first time in his career as he hit a mark of 17.18m (56-04.25), the #6 throw all-time.
// GRABBING THE WIN
Along with Echikunwoke, two other women won their events on the night including Brooke Catherine, last week's AAC Female Field Athlete of the Week, and freshman Kennedy Marable. Catherine once again cleared a four-meter height, this time winning with a best of 4.11m (13-05.75). For the second week in a row, she took a crack at clearing 4.31m, but was unable to on all three of her attempts. Marable took home the top spot in the long jump with a big personal-best leap of 5.64m (18-06.00), not only putting her over 18' for the first time this year, but also drawing her closer to the all-time Top 10 (currently 12th).
// ADVANCING
With the AAC meet taking place next week, several Bearcats got in one final chance to race in a preliminary round while trying to advance to the final, something they will be called upon to do next week. For the women, both Haisha Bisiolu (60m) and Juliana Puopolo (60m hurdles) reached the final while the men saw Mykel Chambers (60m) also make his final. Bisiolu ran 7.57 in the prelims before taking third overall in the final at 7.66. For Puopolo, her time of 8.89 in the hurdles advanced her to the final where she was seventh overall in a personal-best 8.74, just 0.04 seconds off the Top 10 list. Finally, Chambers ran a season-best 6.89 in the short sprint for the men to make the final and finished sixth overall in 6.91. Anthony Woods also made the final, but did not run after qualifying with a season-best 6.90.
