CINCINNATI - Justin Glass went 3 for 5, Braden Kline hit 3 for 4 and the University of Cincinnati baseball team beat Oakland (Mich.) University 5-4 to sweep a Saturday doubleheader at Marge Schott Stadium.
UC's bullpen was brilliant, leading the Bearcats from a two-run deficit by combining for 5.2 scoreless innings. Freshman RHP Bryan Chenoweth pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win as a Bearcat. Redshirt sophomore lefty Jason Pascuzzi tossed two shutout innings and junior RHP Zach Isler put up a zero in the ninth inning to get his second save in as many days.
Trailing 4-2, Cincinnati responded with a three-run fourth inning. Kline and sophomore 2B Ryan Quinn led off the frame with consecutive singles. Junior C J.P. Jackson moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, sophomore shortstop Matt Williams, drove in Kline and Quinn with a two-RBI single up the middle to tie the score at 4-4. Two batters later, Glass singled to put runners on the corners, setting up a double-steal that scored Williams.
OU built its only lead of the ballgame in the fourth inning when the Grizzlies scored three runs on four hits all with one out. UC starting pitcher Matt Ring was chased after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings pitched. Chenoweth relieved Ring with runners on the corners and one out and induced a 4-6-3 double play to get the Bearcats out of the fourth-inning jam
UC went on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a throwing error by Oakland catcher Jake Morton. Junior OF Jake Proctor walked with one out and advanced to second on a single by Glass to set up runners on first and second. Proctor and Glass performed a double-steal and as Proctor slid into third base, Morton's throw sailed high into left field, allowing Proctor to score.
Oakland tied the score in the top of the second after the Grizzlies produced three consecutive two-out singles, capped by Nolan Jacoby's RBI single to center field.
Cincinnati reclaimed a one-run lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Glass that scored Proctor, who reached base with a one-out single and stole second before Glass drove him home.
The Bearcats and Grizzlies will conclude their four-game series with a 1 p.m. Sunday tilt at Marge Schott Stadium, which will be streamed live on GoBEARCATS.com. Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Christian McElroy will get the start for Cincinnati.
