TicketsCINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics held its annual International Student-Athlete Extravaganza Wednesday evening (September 5) as 60 international student-athletes representing 24 countries were celebrated in an event hosted by UC's Student-Athlete Support Staff (SASS). The event, held inside the Richard E. Lindner Center, saw coaches, staff and members of the University's International Services staff meet with the international Bearcats and show their support.
The evening, which was emceed by Laura Johnston, a member of the swimming and diving program and a native of Canada, started with a brief presentation from UC International. The Director of International Services, Ron Cushing, discussed the different services their department provides and key information that all international students need to know. Following the presentation, the international student-athletes had the opportunity to share information about their country and also meet and mingle with other international student-athletes from different teams. Some of the student-athletes also were able to bring a signature dish from their country for everyone to enjoy.
The new student-athletes were welcomed as they each stood up to introduce themselves and add their headshot to the map with all of the returning international student-athletes. Nearly half of the pictures placed came from three nations, including 17 from Canada, six from Spain and five from England. Pictures also were hung on nations as far away as China and Australia and as close as Mexico and the Bahamas. Following the posting of pictures, the event ended with a friendly competition of trivia asking interesting facts about each of the countries.
