CINCINNATI - With 77% of all student-athletes recording a 3.0 or better grade-point average, the University of Cincinnati Athletics Department has once again posted a record-breaking semester GPA following the conclusion of the Spring 2019 semester. Collectively, the Bearcats teams combined to record a departmental GPA of 3.372 thanks to 16 of UC's 17 teams recording a 3.0 or better as well to help the department to its 22nd-consecutive grading period with a combined 3.0 or better GPA.
To reach the new benchmark, seven teams posted their highest GPAs in program history with one tying its best mark. Two of those squads led the department in their respective genders with women's soccer scoring a 3.813 GPA and men's cross country recording a mark of 3.617. Other teams that recorded record GPAs included men's basketball, women's basketball, lacrosse, women's swimming & diving and men's track & field. Women's track & field tied their record mark that was set in the Spring 2017 semester. What is more impressive about some of the records this semester is they came during the competition season for several of those teams, including:
• Men's Basketball (AAC Tournament Champions & NCAA Tournament participants)
• Women's Basketball (WNIT Elite Eight)
• Lacrosse (AAC runners-up in the program's first postseason appearance)
• Women's Swimming & Diving (AAC runners-up)
• Men's Track & Field (best AAC outdoor finish at 3rd place)
• Women's Track & Field (AAC runners-up indoors and outdoors)
While nearly all teams held a 3.0 or better GPA, 11 of those squads posted a GPA of 3.4 or better with eight recording a GPA of 3.5 or better. That group included men's cross country (3.617), women's cross country (3.650), women's golf (3.623), lacrosse (3.610), women's soccer (3.813), women's swimming & diving (3.671), tennis (3.727) and women's track & field (3.518).
Individually, a record-tying 50 Bearcats earned TopCat distinction after posting perfect 4.0 semester GPAs. Women's soccer led the way with 10 of its student-athletes earning TopCat honors, including Jane Sensibaugh, who competed with the indoor and outdoor track & field teams following the soccer season. Football, who posted a 3.136 GPA, had the most of any men's team as seven of its players post 4.0s. All told, 320 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or better to claim Bearcats Honor Roll accolades while a record-breaking 231 Bearcats carried a 3.4 or better to be named to the Dean's List.
Additionally, the cheerleading team and dance squad both had stellar marks in the classroom as well as 50 individuals (34 cheer/16 dance) posted a 3.0 GPA or better with 34 of those of spirit squad members (24 cheer/10 dance) earning Dean's List honors. Ten total members (six cheer/four dance) also earned TopCat distinction. When adding the cheer and dance numbers to the mix, the department saw 370 of its members post a 3.0 or better GPA; 265 earn Dean's List honors; and 60 post perfect 4.0 GPAs.
