Number 11 Virginia topped Cincinnati 1-0 in the first game of the Saint Louis Nike Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Cavaliers senior midfielder John Hartman provided the decisive strike on a penalty kick, and sophomore keeper Ryan Burke posted his third consecutive shutout.
Virginia (3-0-0) dominated a scoreless first half, but had a variety of scoring opportunities thwarted by Bearcats keeper Mike Vessells. The Cavaliers out-shot UC 7-3 and had a 4-1 edge on corner kicks. Vessells made three saves.
Virginia broke on top in the 48th minute Hartman's penalty kick. UC defender Edward Parkes lost his footing in the Bearcats' penalty area and grabbed the ball when Cavs forward Adam Cristman tired to step around him. Although Vessells read the shot properly, Hartman still beat the UC keeper inside the left post.
Virginia out-shot Cincinnati (0-2-0) 11-6 and
finished with a 4-3 edge on corners. Virginia's Burke made three saves, while Vessells also
finished with three.
The Bearcats meet No. 24 SMU at noon on Sunday, Sept. 12. The Cavaliers face No. 3 Saint Louis University.
