Final Results
University of Cincinnati junior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) posted a final-round 68 Tuesday en route to finishing third with a tournament career-low 7-under 72-69-68=209 at the Fossum Memorial at Point O'Woods Golf Course and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
"Jared had a great day today," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He had a 31 for his last nine holes with three birdies and an eagle. It was another solid performance for him."
O'Kelley finished seven strokes behind tournament medalist Sam Weatherhead of Michigan State, who earned a 68-65-69=202. Michigan State's Mitch Rutledge was second at 12-under 70-69-65=204.
O'Kelley's 68 on Tuesday marked his fourth-lowest single-round score as a collegiate player. He has carded a 67 three previous times: at the 2013 Cleveland State Invitational (second round), the 2014 Bluegrass Invitational (third round) and at the Invitational at the Ocean Course (second round) earlier this fall.
Four other Bearcats finished among the top 10 in the individual standings. Junior Chad Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) capped off his career-best tournament finish with a 3-over 75 Tuesday to finish fifth at 5-under 72-64-75=211. He played the tournament unattached from the team score.
Fellow junior Brennen Walsh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder High School) also earned a career-best tournament finish, tying for sixth at 1-under 68-72-75=215. In only his third collegiate tournament, freshman Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) took eighth with an even par 74-73-69=216. While senior Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) rallied on the final day to tie for ninth at 1-over 73-75-69=217.
Cincinnati registered its lowest team score of the fall campaign at 8-under 280 Tuesday to take second place at 12-under 285-287-280=852. Tournament host and 50th-ranked Michigan State won the team title with a school-record 31-under 279-275-279=833. The Spartans' B team was third at 22-over 297-295-294=886. Nebraska finished fourth at 33-over 299-299-299=897.
"A lot of guys did some really good things at this event," Martin said. "If we shoot 280 the rest of the way, we're going to have a great year. It was very important for our guys to play alongside a great team like Michigan State for three rounds. We're continuing to make progress. The puzzle is on the table, we've just got to put the pieces together."
