CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) posted a final-round 3-over par 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for seventh at 5-over 73-73-75=221 at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C.
Newsome, who started his round on the ninth hole, recorded a birdie and four pars to go with three bogeys on the back nine before making eight pars on the front nine. The result marks Newsome's second Top 10 finish of the 2015-16 campaign. During the fall season, he tied for ninth with a 1-over 73-75-69=217 at the Fossum Memorial on Oct. 6.
Newsome finished four strokes behind tournament medalist Thomas Perrot from Memphis, who ended the event at 1-over 73-70-74=217.
"Emerson is finding his stride," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He is in a very good place with his game and hitting the ball maybe the best since he's been here. He's made significant changes in his game since the fall season and will be a key figure in determining how the team performs this spring."
Junior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) notched the lowest round on the Bearcats' squad on Tuesday, posting a 2-under 70 to finish tied for 12th at 8-over 79-75-70=224. He rallied from 3-over at the turn to post five birdies and four par scores on his final nine holes.
Freshman Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) helped the Bearcats place three players in the top 15 when he finished the event at 9-over 74-76-75=225 to tie for 15th place.
The Bearcats posted their best round as a team on Tuesday and finished fifth in the 12-team event at 43-over 307-302-298=907. College of Charleston won the team title at 27-over 297-292-302=891.
"I'm proud of the team for playing very competitively coming out of the fall break," Martin said. "Our scores got better every round because we started finishing some rounds. We still need to be more consistent in our fourth and fifth spots if we want to be a great team."
