University of Cincinnati senior Emerson Newsome shot a 1-under par 71 Monday to climb into a four-way tie for sixth place at 1-under 72-71=143 during second-round play at the American Championship at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida.
Two bogies and a birdie placed Newsome 1-over after his first six holes, but the Dacula, Georgia, native shot 2-under over his remaining 12 holes thanks in part to three birdies on the back nine. He finished the day with four birdies and 11 par scores at the 7,025-yard Quarry Course.
Newsome, who will be striving for his fourth top-10 finish of the spring on Tuesday, sits four strokes behind tournament leader Chase Koepka of USF. Koepka carded a 4-under 68 on Monday and owns a 5-under 71-68=139 score after two rounds.
"Emerson hasn't been flawless in this tournament but he's been able to dominate the par-5 holes to this point," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He's had six birdies, an eagle and a par on the eight par 5s so far and that's allowed him to put together some good stretches of play."
UC junior Jared O'Kelley trimmed one stroke off his score from Sunday, posting a second-round even-par 72, but still slipped two places in the standings, tying four other players for 14th place at 1-over 73-72=145. He recovered after three bogies and a 3-over score on the front nine with a trio of birdies and six par scores on the back nine.
Freshman Austin Squires made the biggest jump of any Bearcat, advancing nine spots in the standings Monday to tie two other players for 24th place at 6-over 77-73=150.
"Jared and Austin did some good things today," Martin said. "Jared is driving the ball well and he's very close to having a breakthrough round. Hopefully, that comes Tuesday.
"Austin is just a freshman and is going through new experiences every time he's on the course," Martin added. "He got more comfortable with the speed of the greens today and came up with a good score."
Junior Brennen Walsh dropped into a two-way tie for 30th place at 8-over 73-79=152 after struggling with a 6-over on the back nine Monday. Junior Blake Hamilton is in 36th place at 11-over 78-77=155.
As a team, the Bearcats remain in sixth place at 12-over 295-293=588. USF, ranked No. 15 in the nation, shot 6-under on Monday to expand its lead at 9-under 285-282=567.
