University of Cincinnati junior Jared O'Kelley carded a 1-over par 73 Tuesday to finish tied for 14th place at 2-over 73-72-73=218 at the American Championship at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida.

O'Kelley rallied from a 3-over 39 on the front nine to post three birdie and finish 2-under on the back nine. He ended the day with three birdies and 11 par scores. The result marks his seventh top-25 finish of the year and third of the spring season.

"Jared made a couple of unforced errors and got off to a slow start but was able to battle back with a lot of pars and some key birdies," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He had a solid week."

Senior Emerson Newsome wrapped up his collegiate career by finishing 18th with a 3-over 72-71-76=219. He posted a 4-over 40 on the front nine with four bogies, but completed the day with a pair of birdies and five par scores on the final nine holes.

Newsome finished in the top 25 in all six spring tournaments.

"Emerson had a great career that went beyond the golf course," Martin said. "He was a solid leader, who was accomplished in the classroom and on the course. His play this spring gives him positive momentum for summer tournaments and an upcoming professional career."

Freshman Austin Squires recorded the fourth top-30 finish of his rookie campaign, tying for 29th at 11-over 77-73-77=227. Junior Brennen Walsh tied for 33rd at 13-over 73-79-77=229. Junior Blake Hamilton tied for 36th at 16-over 78-77-77=232.

"We didn't get off to a good start and tried to battle back the rest of the day," Martin said. "We made a little rally on the back nine but the last three holes were very difficult for us."

The Bearcats took sixth place in the nine-team event at 27-over 295-293-303=891. USF, ranked No. 15 in the nation, won the team title at 19-under 285-282-278=845. USF's Aksel Olsen claimed medalist honors at 7-under 70-70-69=209.

"Looking back, we just need to learn how to take advantage of opportunities after we play ourselves into contention," Martin said. "We had plenty of chances but weren't able to take that next step this year. That's something we'll address when the team returns in the fall."
