Four Bearcats Set to Play in NBA Summer League

Four former University of Cincinnati men's basketball players – Jacob Evans III (Golden State), Troy Caupain (Orlando), Gary Clark (Houston) and Kyle Washington (Detroit) – are preparing to take part in the NBA Summer League this week in Las Vegas.

CINCINNATI – Four former University of Cincinnati men's basketball players – Jacob Evans III (Golden State), Troy Caupain (Orlando), Gary Clark (Houston) and Kyle Washington (Detroit) – will take part in the NBA Summer League beginning this week in Las Vegas.

The 12-day, 82-game showcase for up-and-coming talent runs July 6-17, at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. All 30 NBA teams will battle in three preliminary games before being seeded in a tournament that spans July 11-17. Each team will play at least five games and as many as eight.

// JACOB EVANS III – GOLDEN STATE
Evans was drafted by the Warriors as the 28th overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft on June 21 and signed with the organization Monday.

Golden State participates in the inaugural California Classic League, July 2-5, in Sacramento, California, prior to starting play in Las Vegas on July 6. 

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound guard/forward from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, averaged 13.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists as a junior last season, earning first team All-American Athletic Conference honors. He finished his three-year Bearcats career ranked seventh in school history with a .377 career three-point shooting percentage and finished 31st on the scoring list with 1,233 points.

// TROY CAUPAIN – ORLANDO
Caupain will take part in the NBA Summer League for the second year in a row, donning an Orlando Magic uniform this time. He played in the 2017 event for the Toronto Raptors and later received an invite to Orlando's 2017-18 preseason training camp.

Caupain averaged 15.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.7 assists last season with the Lakeland Magic of the NBA G League. 

A 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard from Midlothian, Virginia, Caupain finished his Bearcats career (2014-17) as the only player in school history with more than 1,300 points and 500 assists. He handed out a school-record 515 career assists and tallied 1,317 career points, tying former Bearcats guard Cashmere Wright for 22nd place on Cincinnati's all-time scoring list.

// GARY CLARK – HOUSTON
Clark was named as an invitee to Houston's summer league mini-camp roster on Friday, June 29. He reportedly agreed to a two-way contract with the Rockets following the NBA draft though it has not been officially announced.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward from Clayton, North Carolina, averaged 12.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks in 2017-18 en route to earning honorable mention All-America accolades from the Associated Press. In addition, he was tabbed as the AAC Player of the Year, AAC Defensive Player of the Year and AAC Tournament Most Valuable Player last season while receiving the league's sportsmanship honor.

Clark finished his UC career (2015-18) as one of only five players to tally more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He set the school mark for career starts (137) while finishing second in victories (106) and consecutive games played (139); third in rebounds (1,132); fifth in blocks (180) and 16th in points (1,462).

// KYLE WASHINGTON – DETROIT
Washington signed a summer-league contract to play for Detroit, the organization announced Monday.  

The 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward from Champlin, Minnesota, earned honorable mention All-AAC recognition last season, averaging 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks while shooting 50.5 percent (165 of 327) from the field. The NC State transfer finished with 1,275 collegiate points (871 with Cincinnati [2017, 2018] and 404 points with NC State [2014, 2015]).
