CINCINNATI – Senior Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) scored two goals in his final game as a Bearcat at Gettler Stadium as University of Cincinnati men's soccer dropped a 6-2 decision to visiting USF on Senior Night.
With the loss, UC fell to 3-13-1 overall and 1-5-0 in the American Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, USF moved to 6-7-2 on the season and 3-1-2 in the league.
After honoring the team's four seniors – Melink, Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy), Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) and Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) – prior to the match in a special Senior Night ceremony, the Bearcats contested the Bulls tightly over the opening 10 minutes. USF struck first, though, in the 11th minute and followed with a score during the 30th minute to put the Red & Black in a 2-0 hole at halftime
Looking to get back in the match early in the second half, the Bearcats' hopes were dashed as the Bulls added on a third score in the 55th minute. With UC reeling, the visitors from Florida tacked on three more goals over the next 25 minutes to put the Red & Black out of contention.
The Bearcats refused to go down without a fight, however, as Melink broke through with a score off of a direct ball over the top of the defense from Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) in the 84th minute. The senior was not done as seconds later Melink again beat the Bulls defense off of feeds from Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point) and Commissiong for an 85th minute goal.
Melink led the UC offense on the night with seven total shots, including four on goal. Marcello Jones (Cornwall, England/Truro College) was also active on the offensive end with five shots, including three on target. In addition, Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State College) chipped in three shot attempts, including one on the net. Goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) had another solid match between the pipes with four saves.
