CINCINNATI - The 2019 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships came to a close inside Cessna Stadium in Wichita, Kan., Sunday evening with the University of Cincinnati programs collecting a pair of Top 3 finishes, including the women earning a trophy for their second-place finish. Irati Mitxelena recorded a big personal-best mark to win the triple jump competition while several freshmen on both teams helped the Bearcats climb toward the top of the standings.
// TEAM STANDINGS • WOMEN
In the final women's team standings, the Bearcats scored 107 points to take runner-up honors to host Wichita State, who won the title with 126 points. The Top 5 in the standings was rounded out by SMU (94), Memphis (90) and both UCF and UConn, who tied with 64 points. This week's finish marks the second time this year the UC women have taken runner-up honors after finishing second at the indoor championships earlier this year.

On the men's side, the Bearcats finished third overall with 111 points while Houston (178.75) and WSU (166.75) took the Top 2 spots in the three-day event. The rest of the Top 5 was rounded out by UConn (107) and Tulsa (79). The third-place finish for the men marks the highest placement the team has recorded in the AAC era, surpassing the fourth-place showing it posted in 2015. That same year, the team scored 119.5 points, which edges out this year's 111 points for the most in the AAC era.

This week's finishes marks the first time both teams have finished in the Top 3 in the same meet in the history of the program.
// BOUNCING TO THE TITLE
The 2019 AAC indoor champion in the triple jump, Mitxelena completed the sweep of the event as she bounced her way to a mark of 13.22m (43-04.50) on her sixth and final attempt. The Spanish junior's mark not only earned the team 10 points and garnered her all-conference accolades, it also broke the school record by the slimmest of margins as she edged out Rebecka Abrahamsson's previous record of 13.21m (43-04.25), a difference of one-quarter of one inch.
// FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR... AGAIN
For the second time this year, Caisja Chandler walked away from the conference meet with strong marks that earned her the distinction of AAC Freshman of the Year. The rookie accounted for 14 points in her individual events while helping both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays to runner-up finishes as well. Individually, she finished third in the 100m dash with a time of 11.30 to earn six points before placing second in the 200m in a time of 23.15 to grab eight more points. Both of those times are UC overall and freshman records. Additionally, she bookend her day with the relay finishes, joining Haisha Bisiolu, Faith Banks and Tiona Lattimore in both races. In the 4x100m, the team ran to a time of 44.27 to break the previous school record of 44.33 run two years ago. Then, to cap the day, the team ran 3:38.86 to post the #10 time in program history.

The men also had a rookie that was rolling Sunday as Chris Borzor earned two all-conference honors and had a hand in 20 points for the team. Individually, he finished third overall in both the 200m and 400m events to collect 12 points. In the 200m, he ran 20.57 to post a school and freshman record time after running 47.37 in the open quarter. To start the day, he helped the team of Isaiah McCall, Anthony Woods and Quincy Mitchell run 41.05 in the 4x100m relay to finish fourth overall before capping the day with a sixth-place finish in the 4x400m relay with teammates Connor Duricky, Michael Vitucci and Ryan Kane (3:21.29).
// SCHILLE MAKES AN IMPACT
Andrew Schille had a big impact on the men's team's point total Sunday as the graduate transfer from Northern Kentucky scored nine points in two races. After running the 1,500m qualifying round Saturday, Schille returned to the track Sunday for the final and battled the field to finish third overall in 3:50.19 to earn six team points and all-conference honors. Just two hours later, he stepped back on the track and raced to a time of 14:40.70 in the 5,000m run to place sixth overall and earn three points as well.

For the second outdoor championship in a row, Aaron Bienenfeld entered two long distance races and walked away with a pair of all-conference honors. One day after defending his 10,000m title, Bienenfeld doubled back to race in the 5,000m run and placed third overall with a time of 14:17.82, earning all-conference honors and six team points. Last year, the German won the 10,000m title before taking second in the 5,000m competition.

The women's triple jump not only saw Mitxelena win, but also saw Kennedy Marable post a big PR as well. The sophomore reached the final before bouncing her way to a mark of 12.62m (41-05.00) to move up to #3 on the program's all-time Top 10. She also earned three points for the team and put herself in position to qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Round competition in two weeks.

Six other women scored points on the day for the Bearcats, including three in the discus. In the throwing event, Jane Sensibaugh, a goalkeeper on the UC soccer team, placed fourth overall with a personal-best mark of 49.02m (160-10), a mark that ranks #6 all-time at UC and earned five points. Annette Echikunwoke, the 2019 hammer champion, was seventh (two points) with a toss of 47.01m (154-02) while freshman Malin Smith (one point) was eighth at 44.83m (147-01). On the track, Bisiolu scored two points in the 200m with her time of 23.89 while Banks was sixth in the 400m at 54.73 for the three points. In the 800m, Sammy Hentz ran 2:13.03 to finish fifth and not only earn four points, but also post the best finish in that event for the UC women since 2012.

Six men added points to the team total Sunday with Connor Duricky leading the way as he scored nine points in two events. First, he placed fifth in the 110m hurdles at 14.16 for four points before scoring five points in the 400m hurdles with a time of 53.56. In the 110m hurdles, Arthur Greenlee also ran 14.16 to finish fourth and grab five points for the team as well as moving up to #9 on the all-time Top 10. In the field, Sam Meece (five) and Danny Jones (one) each scored points in the discus as they placed fourth (51.97m/170-06) and eighth (47.38m/155-05), respectively. Nicholas Lauria was fifth in the pole vault (four points) at 4.86m (15-11.25) while Andre Wright placed eighth (one point) in the triple jump (14.49m/47-06.50).

Next up, those Bearcats that qualify will head to Jacksonville, Fla., for the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Round competition May 23-25. The meet will feature the Top 48 declared athletes in each event with the Top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championship Final later this season in Austin, Texas.
