University of Cincinnati senior outfielder A.J. Bumpass was selected in the 39th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday evening.
Bumpass was also selected by the Reds in the 2017 draft in the 29th round as an age-eligible sophomore, but chose to come back to UC. He graduated this spring with a degree in sports administration and ended his career on a high note by being named the American Athletic Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and landing a spot on the Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team.
The right-fielder posted career-highs at the plate this season with a .290 average, eight homers, six triples and 44 RBI, playing 60 of the team's 62 games. He became the career leader for UC and the AAC in triples this season with 15. In his four-year career, Bumpass played 191 games and hit .264 with 38 doubles, 23 homeruns, 119 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He was just as strong defensively, posting a career fielding percentage of .989 with 340 putouts and eight outfield assists. He had just one error in his last two seasons.
Also selected in the MLB Draft was UC signee Morgan Colopy from Centerville, Ohio. He was drafted in the 34th round by the San Francisco Giants.
With Bumpass being drafted, the Bearcats have had at least one player be selected in the past three consecutive years and 13 different players in the past decade. The Reds have recognized local talent, taking eleven different Bearcats, dating back to 1970.
