CINCINNATI -- The No. 25/26 Cincinnati men's golf team will seek to build off its school-record performance in the spring opener when it commences the two-day Colleton River Collegiate Monday in Bluffton, S.C.
The field is comprised entirely of top-100 teams and includes Michigan State (host), No. 24 Georgia Southern, Rutgers, No. 21 Kansas State, Indiana, Iowa State, No. 28 Ohio State, Memphis, Minnesota, No. 46 Missouri and Penn State. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
The Bearcats' lineup features the same as its Dorado Beach Collegiate, with the exception of Wyatt Plattner jumping in for Rylan Wotherspoon, who will still compete individually. The rest features Sam Jean, Ty Gingerich, William McDonald and Ryan Ford. UC pounded its previous-record with a 44-under 820, winning its third tournament out of six this season which already ranks third in school history and the most since 1997-98.
Ford, a freshman and the AAC Golfer of the Week, began the spring with a school-record, 15-under 201 to finish second at the Dorado Beach Collegiate, an event that featured three top-40 opponents, including No. 2 Auburn and No. 12 Virginia. His previous best finishes were 21st and seven-over-par.
Jean holds the team lead with a 68.94 stroke average, including 11 of his 17 rounds coming in the 60s. Out of six events, his lowest finish is 14th, and it includes a title and three top-five finishes. Gingerich is right behind at 69.24, including a career-low 65 in the second round last week. McDonald in Puerto Rico recorded a career-low round (67), score (209) and finish (16th). Plattner was under-par in all three rounds at the Dorado as well and holds a 71.24 stroke average.
Last year's trip saw now-graduated senior Clay Amlung card an 8-under 64 to close it out, matching the school and AAC record. The Bearcats also carded a then-school record 270 on that final day to launch from sixth to second. Each member saved their best for last, including Jean and Gingerich who finished sixth with a 7-under 209. Georgia Southern claimed the title by nine strokes.
