PHYSICAL FORM PROCEDURES If you are interested in trying out for the women's rowing team this season you must have a physical completed and have your doctor fill out the TRYOUT CLEARANCE FORM. If you have already had a physical within the past year you may have your doctor fill out the form with no further examination. Bring this COMPLETED tryout physical form with you to the introductory meeting.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE You should also be aware that in order to compete at UC you must register and be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. It is a simple process, but once you register it may take a bit of time to process your paperwork. So I strongly encourage you to register with the Clearinghouse as soon as possible this summer. You can do this online at http://www.ncaaclearinghouse.net or you can see your high school guidance counselor who will give you the proper forms and procedure. Either way you will need to have your high school guidance counselor send in a copy of your transcripts and test scores. If you have questions on the registration process you can click on the Guide for the College Bound Student Athletes link on the left hand side of the screen. You will not be able to compete unless you are cleared by the NCAA so it is best to get started and contact your guidance counselor as soon as possible.

INTERESTED ATHLETES
At Cincinnati many of our most successful rowers are athletes who have no previous rowing experience. Through hard work and team dedication you can earn the opportunity to compete among the nation's elite. Women's rowing is one of the only collegiate sports that you can learn while in college and still compete at successfully on the Division I level. Eighty percent of the women who are a part of Cincinnati's Rowing program had no knowledge of rowing before they entered college. These rowers come from a mix of sports backgrounds such as basketball, volleyball, track, swimming and cross-country. They find that rowing provides them with a great team atmosphere, a competitive environment and continual athletic challenges that rival most sports they have previously participated in. Our program is designed to help both experienced and non-experienced rowers achieve success in rowing. Though most walk on athletes know little about rowing when they first start, by the end of the fall season they are competing in their first collegiate regatta as a member of the UC Bearcat Rowing Team.

All first year collegiate rowers are considered "novices." As a novice rower, you will race other novice teams from around the country, thus ensuring fair competition for your developing ability. There are two positions athletes can try out for on the rowing team: rower and coxswain. Rowers are traditionally tall and strong, usually between 5'8 - 6'2. Rowing involves a lot of leverage, so height is a distinct advantage. Power and intensity, however, are often found in unique packages. So no matter an athlete's size if they are hard working and tough, they are encourage to try out. Other qualities found in good future rowers are high fitness level, competitive attitude and team-oriented mindset. The second position is that of the coxswain. Coxswains are thought of as the jockey of the team, making tactical and motivational decisions during a race. This person steers the shell, commands the crew and usually weighs less than 115 lbs. Both rowers and coxswains are needed to have a successful team.

If you are interested in our rowing program email me a note that includes your name, phone number, email address, street address, height, weight and athletic background. Feel free to ask any questions you might have, we are always happy to talk about our rowing program and give you any additional information you need.
