CINCINNATI - Former University of Cincinnati women's soccer standout Renee Balconi has been invited to participate in the St. Louis Athletica preseason camp. The St. Louis Athletica is one of seven teams in the Women's professional Soccer league ( WPS), the highest level of women's professional soccer in North America.
Balconi will report to camp on March 1 with 23 other players. She will attempt to earn a spot on the Athletica's roster which will begin its first season of WPS play in April.
Balconi was a three-year starter for the Bearcats from 2001-04. A native of Westerville, Ohio, Balconi earned second-team All-Conference USA honors as a senior.
"My entire journey to the WPS has been challenging and very exciting," said Balconi. "The experience has helped me grow mentally and physically. Most importantly, I have learned to have blind faith in my dream. This entire process has made me realize, more than ever, how much I need my close circle of people in my life. This close circle has given me the strength and vision to jump a little higher and leap a little further toward my dream."
