Feb. 16, 2010
As the University of Cincinnati baseball team kicks off a new decade of action on Friday, Feb. 19, at Florida Atlantic University, the Bearcats wanted to take a look back at the 2000's by selecting a UC Baseball All-Decade Team.
The UC All-Decade team will consist of a 16-man roster and is made up of players who played at least two seasons at Cincinnati from 2000-09. The list was chosen by current and former members of the UC Sports Communications Department using stats and honors from the 2000 season through the 2009 campaign.
UTILITY - Mike Spina (2008-09)
Mike Spina ended his career as one of the most prolific power hitters to ever wear a Bearcats uniform. Spina was a two-time all-BIG EAST performer, taking home second-team honors in both 2008 and 2009. Spina ranks third in home runs (44), sixth in RBI's (148), and first in slugging percentage (.703) all-time in the record books. In the 2008 season, Spina batted .377, mashed 21 home runs, drove in a conference-leading 79 RBI's, had a .731 slugging percentage, and recorded 163 total bases. In that same 2008 campaign, Spina set a single-season UC record by hitting 21 home runs, a mark that stood for just that season, because in the 2009 season, Spina hit 23 long balls. Not just a conventional power hitter, Spina finished his career as a .359 hitter and he owned an on-base percentage of .443, both are fourth best in Cincinnati history. Spina ranks in the Top 10 in seven statistical categories, all done in just two years at Cincinnati.

UTILITY - CRAIG TEWES (1998-01)
In his four seasons at Cincinnati, Craig Tewes was a two-time All Conference USA second-team performer and a member of the All-Freshman Team. In the 2000 and 2001 seasons, Tewes proved to be a very durable player, starting in 118 games. Overall, he is tied for first with fellow all-decade teammate Kevin Youkilis in career games played (230). Tewes also had a knack for getting on base, ranking fifth all-time in on-base percentage (.441). During the 2001 season, Tewes batted .317, with five home runs, 50 RBI's and had an on-base percentage of .471. Helping that OBP was the fact that Tewes had a good eye at the plate, receiving 54 bases on balls, and only striking out 29 times. He finished his career at Cincinnati second in RBI's, third in doubles (57), third in hits (257), fourth in runs scored (190), second in walks (166), third in at-bats (821), tied for second in sacrifice flies (13), tied for fourth in hit-by-pitch (32), and third in total bases (430).
