University of Cincinnati had two student-athletes selected on the final day of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday. Junior pitcher Cam Alldred was selected in the 24th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the 714th overall pick and senior pitcher J.T. Perez was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 29th round, 874th overall.
Alldred finished 5-3 with a 3.95 ERA this past season. He struck out 85 batters to total the seventh-most strikeouts in a single season in UC history. Batters hit just .237 against him while he also walked just 29 in 79.2 innings pitched. Alldred was most impressive during American Athletic Conference play, going 4-0 in seven starts with a 1.94 ERA. He struck out 39 conference opponents in 41.2 innings and was named to the All-AAC Second Team.
Perez was a First Team All-AAC honoree for his remarkable season. The senior went 6-4 with a 2.81 ERA as the Friday night ace for the team. He struck out 72 batters while walking 36 in 93.0 innings pitched. Perez finished the season ranked in the top ten in the conference in ERA, innings pitched and games started. He threw the best game of his career this year when he hurled a complete-game shutout with ten strikeouts against a ranked UConn team. Perez finishes his UC career ranked in the top ten in career starts, innings pitched and strikeouts in the Bearcats record book.
This marks the first time since 2012 that three or more Bearcats have been drafted. UC's senior shortstop Manny Rodriguez was selected in the 10th round of the draft by the New York Mets on Tuesday. Alldred is the first Cincinnati player to be drafted by the Pirates since three Bearcats were in 1972, 1974 and 1975. Perez is the fourth Bearcat to be selected by the Twins; all four were drafted 2008 or later.
Also selected in the final day of the MLB Draft were two UC signees. Gage Hughes from Greenup County High School was taken in the 24th round, 722nd overall by the Kansas City Royals. Glen Richardson, who spent the past season at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, was drafted in the 29th round, 869th overall to the Texas Rangers.
