CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell to Houston 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 18-25) at home in Fifth Third Arena Friday night.

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati volleyball team lost Friday as the Houston Cougars posted a four set (20-25, 25-17, 20-25, 18-25) win at home at the Fifth Third Arena.

The loss dropped Cincinnati's record to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in AAC play.

The Bearcats were led by a double-double from Maria Mallon, who registered 16 kills and 16 digs on the day. Abby Walker also added 16 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kerstin Ficker chipped in for UC with 15 digs to go with four blocks from Walker.

Game Notes

  • Cincinnati had three players in double figures in kills and four players in double figures in digs.
  • Maria Mallon registered her third straight double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs.
  • Abby Walker had a match-high 16 kills for Cincinnati, the third straight game she recorded double-digits in kills.
  • Walker also recorded two aces in the match.
  • Kerstin Ficker had 15 digs, which is a new season high.
  • Madison Waters also recorded a new season high 11 digs and also had seven kills.
  • Cincinnati attackers were helped by a match-high 46 assists from Emme Madden.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 | The Bearcats found themselves in an early deficit, losing the first set 25-20. Houston grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Cougars took control.

SET 2 | Cincinnati rallied after dropping the first set to take the second set 25-17, tying the match at one set apiece. The Bearcats grabbed the set propelled by a strong showing on the attacking end. Cincinnati put together a .343 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set win. The Bearcats rallied from down five at 9-4 to grab the win.

SET 3 | Cincinnati dropped set three, putting the Bearcats in a 2-1 hole. The Bearcats came up short by the score of 25-20. Houston grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 in a set that was knotted up seven times before the Cougars took over the lead.

SET 4 | Cincinnati then fell in the fourth set 25-18 to finish off the match. The Bearcats trailed by as many as eight points as Houston grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 and Cincinnati wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up five times before the Cougars took over in the second half of the stanza.

The Bearcats are back home Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. matchup against the Tulane Greenwave. The game will also air on ESPN+.
