CALI, Colombia - University of Cincinnati track and field freshman Steven McElroy claimed gold for Team USA as the leadoff leg of the men's 4x400-meter relay at the World Athletics U20 Championships Cali22. The first-place time of 3:04.47 marks the fastest U20 men's 4x400-meter relay this year.
McElroy also clocked a time of 45.65 seconds to place second in the men's 400-meter finals on Thursday. The individual finish was his fastest of the meet and third fastest as a Bearcat.
In the semifinals, McElroy improved on his initial mark, crossing in 45.67 to finish second in heat three and secure automatic qualification to the finals. On Tuesday, the freshman recorded a time of 46.38 in the preliminaries and clinched the top spot in his heat to advance.
The World Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial international competition that provides the world an opportunity to see future stars of the sport emerge on a global stage. This year's event was held at Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium in Cali, Colombia.
In July, the Pickerington, Ohio native ran a meet-record time of 44.93 seconds at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships to qualify for the meet. The school record holder has progressed from 47.86 to 44.93 in the 400-meter over the course of the season. As a freshman, McElroy claimed the 400-meter title at both the American Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor championships, while qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
