BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— The University of Cincinnati men's and women's track and field teams racked up three event titles and the men's team leads the team standings at the end of day one at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
The men's team earned 46 points on day one and sits atop the team standings, while the women's team sits in second with 34.5, only 1.5 points behind SMU (36) for first.
The UC women's DMR team of seniors Rylee Penn, Carmen Licht, freshman Gwen Stare and junior Alicia Thorpe broke the championship meet record with a time of 11:21.95 and successfully defended their title crown. The team's time is also the third-fastest in school history.
The men's DMR team of juniors Jack Barchet, Matt Hoak, David Endres, and senior Tyler Wirth broke the Cincinnati program record with a time of 9:41.29 to earn their title. The Tulsa DMR team finished the race in first but was disqualified for a thrown baton.
Sophomore Korbin Spencer claimed the first individual title of the championships for the Bearcats as he won the men's weight throw with a meet record throw of 19.49 meters. It is his first AAC title and his mark ranks third in UC history.
Spencer was not the only Bearcat on the podium in the men's weight throw, as senior Fred Moudani earned a bronze medal with a personal best throw of 18.19m.
The Bearcats also had a pair of student-athletes earn silver medals on day one. Graduate senior Milo Greder placed second in the men's 5,000-meter with a time of 13:54.50 and sophomore Abby Knouff placed second overall in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 4.09 meters.
In the men's mile, Wirth earned the top seed for Saturday's finals after recording a time of 4:10.50. On the women's side, Penn earned the second seed in the women's mile with a time of 4:59.58.
Barchet enters the 800-meter final as the top seed after finishing his prelim race with a personal best time of 1:52.48.
Sophomore Dominique Hall ended day one sitting in second with 3005 points in the men's heptathlon. Hall has three events left, the 60-meter hurdles, 1000-meter, and pole vault, to capture the AAC Title on Saturday.
