Veteran sports marketing and fundraising professional Karen Hatcher serves as the University of Cincinnati’s Executive Senior Associate AD for External Relations and Assistant Vice-President for Development at the UC Foundation.
She joined the Bearcats in December 2012 as the Assistant AD for Leadership Gifts, later being promoted to Associate AD (2013-14), was elevated to her current role in the summer of 2014.
Hatcher has spent 20 years in the field of sports marketing and fundraising, including stints at the professional level, strategic communications, marketing solutions, non-profit work, community outreach, fundraising and event management.
As a member of the department’s leadership team, she oversees UC’s external units, including communications, development, marketing, new media, events/special projects and the ticket office along with managing relationships with strategic partners IMG College, iHeart Media and FOX Sports Ohio. She also was instrumental in spearheading the department’s move to Under Armour to serve as the new official apparel provider.
Hatcher is also a senior development officer with the University of Cincinnati Foundation. She is an assistant vice president for development, and has anchored UC’s fundraising efforts for the $86-million Nippert Stadium Renovation & Expansion project and the Our House 2018 campaign, supporting the $87-million renovation of Fifth Third Arena. Her portfolio also includes strategic planning to enlist philanthropic support for athletics with a focus on developing major gifts to fund capital initiatives, academic and competitive excellence and scholarship endowments. She also acts as the administrative oversight for the women's tennis program.
Prior to joining the Bearcats, she worked as a strategic consultant with Hatcher & Associates Marketing Services, providing creative marketing solutions, revenue generation and fundraising concepts, client relation management initiatives and effective brand-building efforts for high-profile businesses including Outback Steakhouse/OSI, Verizon, M & M Mars, Kraft Foods and Hills Pet Nutrition and charities along with NBA, NFL and MLB teams.
She has assisted in raising funds for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Easter Seals, Seven Hills School, Berkley Preparatory School and the Tampa Bay Rays Foundation helping those organizations with marketing and events, revamping their donor bases and building volunteer support.
Prior to her role as a consultant, Hatcher served as the Director of Special Events for the Houston Astros for six years where she oversaw events, promotions and new business development initiatives.
She earned a bachelor's degree in communications and a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University and is a member of both NACWAA and NAADD.
Hatcher and her husband Billy have a son, Derek, who played football at the University of Richmond and a daughter, Chelsea, who played soccer at the University of Tennessee.
