While many University of Cincinnati Athletics supporters and fans recognize the acronym “UCATS” as being related to the athletic department and the many UC student-athletes who compete for the glory of the red and black, few know the organization’s history and specific day-to-day operations.
Beginning in 1979, UCATS, an acronym representing University of Cincinnati Athletic Teams Scholarships, was created to serve as the framework for supporting efforts of Bearcats student-athletes.
UCATS falls under the greater umbrella of the University of Cincinnati Foundation, which strives to inspire a community of UC and UC Health supporters through the power of philanthropy. With that in mind, UCATS represents the principal fundraising arm of the University of Cincinnati Athletic Department.
Purpose-driven and relationship-centered, UCATS provides a way for individuals and corporate entities to help talented young people receive a quality education, while ensuring UC’s tradition of academic and athletic excellence.
UCATS donors are a key part of the UC Athletics community, and are essential to the future success of Bearcats Athletics. Their annual contributions provide vital financial support that directly benefits student-athletes in a multitude of ways. Most predominately, donor funding helps offset the educational expenses of almost 500 Bearcats student-athletes, enabling them to succeed in the classroom, in their respective sport, and in the community. This can be accomplished through an endowment, which invests donated funds and allows the interest earned to fund scholarships into perpetuity. These gifts leave a lasting impact on the numerous student-athletes receiving their education from UC, while also allowing donors the ability to see the transformational impact and form personal relationships with the many student-athletes who will benefit from their support.
Funding also benefits capital projects, campaigns and facility renovations, allowing Bearcats to compete, train, learn and grow as athletes and budding professionals in state-of-the-art facilities. Projects such as these keep current Bearcats performing at the highest level of competition against rivals, as well as making UC a viable option to new recruiting classes, continuing UC’s legacy of success and excellence, while moving toward new visions and aspirations.
Generous gifts through the UCATS department also fund special intent projects that aim to ensure the UC student-athlete experience is second to none. Goals of these special intent campaigns are to keep student-athletes healthy and safe by ensuring access to new medical and training technologies, dietary specialists, better options for team travel so that academic success remains a priority, and mental health programs that help young athletes balance the many stresses and struggles they may face.
Donors also have the flexibility to craft their support to be unique and specific, should they so choose. As an example, specialized funds have been created by donors with a distinct passion to provide direct support to a certain subset of student-athletes, such as the Women’s Excellence Fund which provides direct support to female Bearcats student-athletes.
UCATS donors are alumni, friends and advocates of the university, of many ages, genders, race, and religions, who span across many geographic locations, that recognize the value of the intercollegiate athletics experience here at the University of Cincinnati.
Once identified as a UC Athletics supporter, donors are assisted by UCATS staff members to foster a strong relationship with the athletic department, whether that be through specialized season ticket opportunities, exclusive athletic events, or creating a lasting, personal bond with a student-athlete who benefits from their support.
It is quite truthful that UCATS donors are an integral piece of the successful past, the steadfast present, and the exciting future of UC Athletics.
Generations of generosity have provided the ability for UC student-athletes to thrive today, and say “there’s no better time to be a Bearcat.” With the vision, support, and tenacity of UCATS donors, UC Athletics leadership, and Bearcats student-athletes, this sentiment will surely ring true far into the future.
