CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Former University of Cincinnati men's soccer player John Liersemann (Carrollton, Texas/Trinity Christian) has signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer Leagues. Liersemann will report to Pittsburgh to begin training with the team on Monday, March 14.
"John was an excellent player for us for four years. He has a chance now to continue his soccer career at the professional level," noted UC head coach Hylton Dayes. "He has prepared himself to succeed and we wish him all the best."
A second-team All-Conference USA selection in 2004, Liersemann ranks fifth in school history with 16 career assists. He was fifth in C-USA last season with six assists, leading the Bearcats to a third-place finish in conference play. Liersemann, named to the C-USA All-Freshman team in 2001, was a four-year starter, scoring seven career goals and accounting for 30 points.
"This is a great opportunity and a perfect fit for me. I am just going to go in, work hard, and improve as much as possible so I can, hopefully, move on to the next level," Liersemann said. "To play soccer for a living; it is my childhood dream."
Pittsburgh, the 2004 USL Second Division regular season champions, opens exhibition play on April 10. Liersemann will head back to Cincinnati on May 28 when the Riverhounds visit the USL's Kings.
