CINCINNATI - Josh Schneider led a come from behind charge on the final leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay to seal a 143-133 win for the University of Cincinnati men's swimming and diving team over Kentucky, Saturday on senior day at the Keating Aquatic Center.
Schneider teamed with Patryk Wakula, Matt Hays, and Nathan Williams to set a KAC pool record of 3:05.43. Schneider trailed entering the pool for the final leg and covered the last 100 meters in 43.57, touching in just ahead of Kentucky's Kyle Green (3:05.68).
It was the third-straight win for the men's team as the Bearcats closed out the dual-meet season.
The women's squad fell to the Wildcats by a 152-112 margin. Prior to the meet, UC honored its senior class, consisting of: Jakub Carda, Cassandra Dorl, Allison Griffin, Rob Langford, Shannon McCarthy, Natalie Plunkett, Tammy Smith, Mark Talma, and Logan White.
Dorl was the inspirational story of the day, competing in the 50 freestyle despite a severely sprained ankle that left her on crutches and able to push off with only one foot.
Wakula teamed with Jeremy Peter, Schnieder, and Hays to earn top honors in the 400-medley relay. The quartet clocked in at 3:25.89 to open the meet.
In addition to the two relay wins, Schneider also grabbed event wins in the 50 freestyle (20.55), and 100-yard butterfly (50.27).
Peter earned three individual event wins, taking top honors in the 100 backstroke (51.56), 200 breaststroke (2:03.31), and 200 IM (1:50.75). His time in the 200 breaststroke broke the KAC pool and UC pool records, while his clocking in the 200 IM broke the KAC pool record.
Carda earned a win in in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.51 while Wakula took the top spot in the 200 butterfly (1:52.80).
For the women's squad, Kirtley Krombholz won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. She tallied point totals of 170.25, and 171.20, respectively.
Elinore de Jong won the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.63, while Emma Misanik won the 200 breaststroke with a 2:25.00 clocking. Misanik was second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.24. She was neck-and-neck with UK's Lindsey Graessle, but was out-touched (1.06.10).
The quartet of Shannon McCarthy, Misanik, de Jong, and Lange Gilby placed second in the 400-medley relay, clocking 3:55.19.
Anna Bersani and McCarthy placed second and third, respectively in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:00.51 and 1:00.54. They flip flopped in the 200 backstroke with McCarthy taking second (2:09.40) and Bersani taking third (2:12.00).
The Bearcats will be off until the BIG EAST Championship meet which is scheduled to run from Feb. 18-21 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
