Week Five College Football Polls (ESPN.com)
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team moved up in rankings after a 28-20 home win over Fresno State at Nippert Stadium on Saturday, with the program achieving its highest ever weekly ranking.
The Bearcats (4-0) check in at No. 10 in the Associated Press poll and No. 11 in the USA Today Coaches poll. UC's previous best ranking in all polls was No. 12. The Bearcats ranked No. 12 in the AP, USA Today, and Bowl Championship Series Standings entering the 2009 FedEx Orange Bowl. UC also held down the No. 12 spot in the AP poll on Nov. 8, 1954.
UC scored 28 points against Fresno State despite only having the ball for 16:18. Tony Pike finished 18-of-26 for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Two of the touchdown strikes went to Mardy Gilyard who hauled in nine catches for a career-best 177 yards and two touchdowns. Gilyard was awarded a helmet sticker by Lou Holtz on ESPN's College Gameday Final Saturday night.
Craig Carey had his first career interception on a pivotal fourth-down play in the fourth quarter and Aaron Webster sealed the win with a solid hit to break up a Bulldogs fourth-down pass with 39 seconds remaining.
UC returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 3 at to face longtime rival Miami (OH) in the 114th Battle for the Victory Bell. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be available online at ESPN360.com.
Cincinnati fans wanting to purchase the $20 tickets to the game in the UC seating area at Yager Stadium are encouraged to buy through the UC Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. or in person at the ticket window in the fourth floor main lobby of the Richard E. Lindner Center.
The Cincinnati-Miami Victory Bell is the oldest non-conference college football rivalry in the United States. The two schools have met 113 times on the field with Miami leading the all-time series 59-47-7, including a 14-7-2 mark in Oxford. The first meeting in the series was on Dec. 8, 1888 and was the first collegiate football game played in Ohio.
