CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati football head coach Luke Fickell joined 16 other coaches on the midseason watch list for the 2018 Dodd Trophy, presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation announced Thursday.
The Dodd Trophy, college football's most coveted coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's philosophy.
The midseason watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, taking into consideration each program's graduation rate, current performance during the 2018 season, Academic Progress Rate (APR), as well as commitment to service and charity in the community.
Coach Fickell, in his second season at the helm of the Bearcats program, has led the team to a 6-0 (2-0 American Athletic Conference) start, the team's best since 2009. UC, one of 11 remaining undefeated teams in the NCAA FBS, moved into the polls this week, sitting at No. 25 in both the Associated Press and Amway USA Today Coaches polls.
The Bearcats are defeating opponents by an average of 18.4 ppg, which includes home wins over Alabama A&M, Ohio and Tulane and road triumphs at UCLA, Miami (OH) and UConn. UC leads the nation in team passing efficiency defense and ranks among the NCAA FBS Top-10 teams in scoring defense (3), total defense (5), net punting (6) and passing yards allowed (8).
"We have a very competitive field vying for this year's Dodd Trophy halfway through the season," said Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & President. "We look forward to seeing which coaches can separate themselves from the rest of the pack as we get into the heart of conference play these next few weeks."
A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame members will identify a list of finalists at the conclusion of the 2018 season. The winner of the 2018 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Week.
UC is off this week, but returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Temple. The Bearcats and Owls kickoff at noon from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The game will air nationally on ESPNU, the ESPN app and via radio on 700 WLW AM in Cincinnati.
