CINCINNATI - For the second consecutive year, Austin Squires (Union, Ky. Ryle HS) has qualified for match play at the U.S. Amateur.

Squires, who graduated from the University of Cincinnati in May, survived a 27-man playoff to earn the last of three match-play qualifying spots determined Wednesday morning at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.

It was down to three players on the fourth playoff hole, the par-4, 18, when Squires secured the last invitation. He made a 2-foot putt for par, finishing ahead of bogies from Jordan Garner of Australia and Jacob Bridgeman of Inman, S.C.

Squires recorded par scores on the first two holes as the playoff field dwindled to 13 players. His 8-foot birdie on the third playoff hole, on the par-5, 17, helped trim the group to three.

Squires will face the top seed in the 64-player match play event, Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, N.Y., later Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. ET.

FS1 will provide coverage of match play action from 4-7 p.m. ET.

A three-time American Athletic Conference all-league performer and 2017 AAC Player of the Year, Squires finished the second of two stroke play rounds Tuesday evening at 5-over par 70-75=145 to move on to the playoff.

Squires advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur last year in Pebble Beach, Calif. It marked the highest finish by a Bearcat at the U.S. Amateur in school history. Overall, Squires has played in the U.S. Amateur three times. He also qualify for the event in 2017 but fell short of advancing to match play.

UC rising junior Clay Amlung (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier HS) also participated in the U.S. Amateur this week at Pinehurst. He missed the cut after posting a 15-over 79-76=155.
