CINCINNATI – Three University of Cincinnati student-athletes, Aaron Bienenfeld (men's outdoor track & field), Blake Hanna (men's swimming & diving) and Chris Vogt (men's basketball) were tabbed as American Athletic Conference Sport Scholar-Athletes of the Year Wednesday as the league continued rolling out its postseason academic honors.
The award winners are selected by the AAC Faculty Athletic Representatives and winners receive a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.
Bienenfeld and Vogt's honors marks the first time a Bearcats student-athlete has taken the scholar-athlete of the year honor in basketball or outdoor track and field. A UC men's swimmer has won the sport award for the third time in four years after Chris Bready was recognized in 2017-18 and Din Selmanovic in 2019-20.
AARON BIENENFELD Bienenfeld earned dean's list honors seven times during his UC career and was tabbed for the Bearcats Honor Roll on seven occasions in addition to being named Bearcats STRONG in 2018-19. He was named all-academic by the USTFCCCA in 2019 and 2020 and earned spots on the AAC All-Academic Team in 2018-19 and 2019-20. He competed in the NCAA Cross Country and indoor and outdoor track and field championships. He was the AAC Champion cross country in 2019, the 5,000m indoors in 2020, in the 10,000m outdoors in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and also earned all-conference honors in the 5,000m in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
BLAKE HANNA Hanna completed a bachelor's degree in information technology and an MBA concurrently, earning a 3.80 undergrad GPA and a 3.59 graduate GPA. The finalist for the UC's 2021 Jean Stephens Memorial Award was a two-time College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America Honorable Mention Scholar-All America choice and was named to the AAC All-Academic Team four times. Hanna was the AAC Champion in the 100 back, 200 back and was a part of the 200-medley relay squad which won its race and set pool, meet and school records in the process. He qualified for the NCAA Championship in three races and the U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I in the 200 back and swam his way into the second wave of the trials after a standout race in the preliminaries.
CHRIS VOGT Vogt carried a 3.50 GPA in the finance program and was named to the Bearcats Honor Roll four times, the dean's list twice and the 2019-20 AAC All-Academic Team. On the court, he started 21 games for UC, ranking fifth in blocks and tying for 15th in offensive rebounds. He averaged 5.0 points per game, 3.0 rebounds per game and 1.0 blocks per game. He totaled a career high six blocks against Temple on Feb. 12, 2021. He was tabbed for Preseason Second-Team All-AAC honors entering the 2020-21 campaign.
