- Lettered in baseball and basketball.
- Served as captain and co-leading scorer of the 1939-40 basketball team.
- Returned to UC as head baseball coach in 1954 and achieved almost immediate success, compiling an 87-39-1 record in seven seasons.
- Helped recruit future Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax to UC on a basketball scholarship and also coached future pros Mike Hershberger and Carl Bouldin.
- Guided UC to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in baseball in 1956.
- Became head basketball coach in 1960-61 and directed UC to NCAA national championships in each of his first two seasons, and a near miss of a then-unprecedented third straight title in an overtime loss in the 1963 NCAA championship game.
- Won national coach of the year honors in each of his three seasons.
- Compiled a 113-28 record in five seasons and his .801 winning percentage is the top among all UC head coaches.
- His .917 winning percentage in the NCAA Tournament is still a national record.
- UC Athletic Hall of Fame 1978.
