- One of UC's top players of the 1940s and the prototype of a productive tight end.
- Played on the 1940-41-42 UC teams before entering the service for World War II.
- Returned to UC following the war to complete his academic and athletic career.
- Captain of the 1946 team that upset defending Big Ten champion Indiana, a game in which he scored a touchdown and kicked a field goal.
- Helped UC to a 9-2 record in 1946, capped with an 18-6 win over Virginia Tech in the Sun Bowl, UC's first bowl appearance.
- Also lettered in basketball and baseball.
- Played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, later earning a selection to the all-time Steelers team at tight end.
- UC Athletic Hall of Fame 1982.
