Three-sport standout at UC, lettering in basketball, track and baseball.
His .473 batting average in 1926 was a UC record until recent years when the increase in games played merited an increase in the minimum number of at-bats.
Signed with the Cincinnati Reds upon the completion of college and went straight to the major leagues to begin his 13-year professional career.
Closed his pro career with a .300 batting average, 47 home runs, 501 RBIs and 84 stolen bases.
Began a 23-year stint as head coach at Yale University where he guided his 1947 and 1948 teams to the College World Series, with future president George Bush playing first base.
Elected to the American Association of College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1970 and the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
Member of the UC Athletic Hall of Fame charter class of inductees.
