- Captain of the 1900 UC baseball team and played a key role as a player and organizer of the school's baseball teams at the turn of the century.
- Embarked on a 13-season career in the professional ranks, playing for the Cincinnati Reds (1904-09) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1910-16), finishing with a lifetime batting average of .265.
- Served as player-manager of the Cardinals beginning in 1913.
- Became manager of the New York Yankees in 1918, where during his 12 seasons he coached the Bronx Bombers to six American League pennants and three World Series titles.
- Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.
