CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati?s Varsity Eight cruised past Louisville and West Virginia to claim its first title of the spring season during the Bearcats? first-ever NCAA-sponsored home regatta on Saturday afternoon at Harsha Lake in East Fork State Park. Women?s varsity crews from Cincinnati, Louisville and West Virginia, along with UC?s men?s club team, competed along the 2,000-meter course.

The Bearcats? Varsity Eight, directed by coxswain Renae Fehring (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) capped off a day of varsity racing with its best time of 6:45.1, nearly eight seconds (one-boat length) ahead of NCAA Central Region rival Louisville. West Virginia, a member of the Mid-Atlantic Region, finished third with a time of 7:07.7.

Joining Fehring in the winning boat was Katie Schatzel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota) at stroke, followed by Solveig Hansen (Frederiksberg, Denmark), Denise Johns (Copley, Ohio/Copley), Megan Mathias (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington), Laura Rigrish (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Erin Liesenfield (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Emilie Graham (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) and Hallie Schneider (Akron, Ohio/Our Lady of the Elms) at bow.

?I was very happy with the Varsity Eight?s performance,? head coach Tim Royalty commented. ?We are starting to turn things around from last weekend and get on the right track. Our focus is always the Varsity Eight and right now we are at our deepest.

?I was happy with the Varsity Four seeing that they were racing against other team?s first (Varsity Eight) boats. I also thought the Novice did alright. It was a close race all the way and we overall rowed well.?

West Virginia won the Varsity Four with a time of 7:23.6, followed by Louisville which crossed the finish line at 7:28.5. Cincinnati?s A boat took third, just three second behind the Cardinals while its B boat was fourth with a time of 7:46.8.

The Novice crew had a tough time catching Louisville in its two races, finishing second to the Cardinals in both the Novice Four and Eight. West Virginia did not compete in the Novice Eight race, but placed third in the Novice Four, edging UC?s B boat by second seconds at the finish.

The Bearcats will next travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Saturday, April 21 to race in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Chmapionship.
