CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team played to a draw with Dayton and defeated Evansville, 1-0, to open the spring season at Meyers Field on Sunday. Junior Ann Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) picked up the lone goal of the day on an assist from junior Amy Simonson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) in the second half against the Flyers.
Cincinnati will participate in six spring matches combined with practice sessions in preparation for the official season next fall. The Bearcats begin preparation this spring to improve upon their 16-6 overall, 9-3 conference record and runner-up finish in the C-USA Tournament.
UC battled Dayton to a scoreless draw in the morning match, with junior goalkeeper Christy Hoffman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) recording four saves.
In the afternoon match against Evansville, play was even until the second half when the Bearcats pushed the ball up front to Simonson who popped the ball back out to Thomas in the middle. Thomas lifted a shot over the goalkeepers head from the 20-yards out the game-winner.
"We lost several key players from last year and this spring wil be a good chance for everyone to step up," head coach Meridy Glenn said. "I thought we responded well today. Our mentality is good in that we want to have a good spring to prepare for the fall. The work ethic and attitudes were good and we will continue to work hard."
The Bearcats are next in action against Ball State on Friday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Meyers Field.
