Bearcats Earn Share of Ohio South Cup

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team won a share of the Ohio South Cup title with a victory against Dayton, 2-0, and a scoreless draw with Wright State at Meyers Field on Sunday.
In Cincinnati's first match against Dayton, the Bearcats got on the board first with a goal by sophomore Scott Lyons (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller). Lyons gained possession on a clear while the Flyer goalkeeper was out of position and sailed the ball in the goal from 25-yards out. Freshman Jeremiah Gallegos (Laguna Beach, Calif./St. Margaret) provided the team's second score, a rebound of a Tim Brown (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington) set piece in the middle of the second half.
The Bearcats battled Wright State to a scoreless draw in the championship match.
Junior Derek Moore (Saratoga, Calif./Cal Poly) had three saves against Dayton and five against Wright State.
"We have a great attitude right now in that we want to improve everyday to prepare for the fall," said assistant coach Greg Bowman. "Everyone's giving 100 percent effort and is excited to be out there working towards our goals."
In the other matches of the tournament, Wright State defeated Xavier, 2-0, and in the consolation final, Dayton beat Xavier, 1-0.
The Bearcats are next in action next when they take on the Cincinnati Riverhawks, the Queen City A-league squad, on Wednesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. UC will see familiar faces on the opposing team as former UC soccer standouts Jamal Frazier, Myron Vaughn and Robert Burlew now play for the Riverhawks. The Riverhawks are an affiliate of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids.
