CINCINNATI, Ohio-- The University of Cincinnati rowing team made history on Sunday afternoon, winning two races and placing fifth in its other race at the team's first-ever NCAA Central Regional Championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Cincinnati's Second Varsity Eight opened UC's final round of competition, beating Duke by nearly 20-seconds to place first in the third level finals (7:11.9). The victory placed the team 13th overall in the regatta.
The Novice Eight gave UC its second win of the day, knocking off Duke, Notre Dame, Southern Methodist, Michigan State and Clemson in the second level finals. The Bearcats' time of 7:09.6 along the 2,000-meter course was their fastest of the season and placed the team seventh overall.
Competing in one of the closest semifinals races of the day, UC's Varsity Eight was edged by No. 18 Clemson to place sixth in its semifinal and earn a spot in the third level finals. Only one second separated second from sixth place in the race. In the finals, the Bearcats took fifth with a time of 6:59.4, placing the team 17th in the overall competition. Clemson won the third level final in 6:44.9, followed by Indiana (6:52.1), North Carolina (6:54.6) and Southern Methodist (6:57.3).
"The semifinals was a really good race for the varsity," commented Assistant Coach Tracy Stanley. "They were kind of disappointed that they didn't make the second level finals, but they were proud of how well they raced against nationally-ranked crews.
"Overall, I think we did really well this weekend. The Novice and Second Varsity Eight did really good. It was a pretty exciting way to end the season."
