Over the winter break from classes, the University of Cincinnati rowing team took part in a winter training trip to Melbourne, Fla. They spent 10 days, from Dec. 8 through Dec. 18, rowing along the Indian River, which is an intercoastal salt water river.

The team rowed twice a day and did three days of land work outs. The trip was intended to aid in the preparation for the spring season which begins March 16. According to head coach Tim Royalty, the trip went well.

?The trip was a lot of fun and I consider it a success,? Royalty said. ?I think we made a lot of progress and I am very encouraged for our spring season.?

Royalty was pleased with what he saw from his team in Florida.

?From what I saw, we?re going to have a battle for positions in our first and second boats,? Royalty said.?Alot of the freshmen stood up and really got integrated into our system, so I?m very excited to get started with our spring season.?

The rowing team has been going down to Florida for 10 years now. Before rowing became a varsity sport, Royalty took the club team.

?It?s a nice exception rowing has that we are able to take a trip, ?Royalty said. ?It?s nice to have that time with the team where we can work together and not have any distractions. We really get alot of work done.?

The rowing team will start the spring season on March 16 with a training trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn. The first home regatta of the spring season is April 6 against Indiana, Dayton, West Virginia and Eastern Michigan. Competition takes place at the East Fork State Park.
