CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The 2002 Cincinnati volleyball team used 12 kills and seven digs by Julie DuPont to top a team of Bearcat alumni, 3-0, Saturday night in Laurence Gym. The match served as the only home preseason exhibition for the defending Conference USA champions.
UC jumped ahead early in game one and won 30-15 and pulled away late to win game two, 30-22. The alumni led most of game three before the Bearcats tied the game at 27 and won 30-28.
?I thought the match went well,? said head coach Reed Sunahara. ?The alumni team played well and fought hard.?
Three-time all-Conference USA honoree Becky Tenkman-Mirick (1995-98) led the alumni with 29 kills. UC career blocks record holder and current assistant coach Stephanie Meinig (1997-2000) had eight kills and five blocks and 1999 C-USA Setter of the Year Annie Gant (1998-99) had 29 assists.
The 2002 Bearcats got solid play from Rachel Torblaa, who had 11 kills and three blocks. Trish Ladusaw recorded six kills and eight digs and Laura Lauder had 35 assists.
?I?m happy with how we played,? Sunahara added. ?The first team played very well. We just need to fine tune our engine. Now we need to get ready for Cal Poly.?
The Bearcats open the season on Friday, Aug. 30 when they play Cal Poly-SLO at the Shamrock Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. UC will also face No. 25 Notre Dame and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
