Freshman Jack Nelson went 2 for 4 on Sunday vs. Duke |
DURHAM, N.C.---Duke plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and added two more in the eighth to post a 7-1 win over Cincinnati on Sunday. With the win, the Blue Devils took two of the three games played in the opening series of the year for both squads.
The Blue Devils loaded the basis against freshman Bryan Wood (0-1) in the seventh on three singles, including an RBI bunt single by Senterrio Landrum. Wood hit Michael Gloom, the final batter he faced to load the bases and bring Rob Reel out of the Cincinnati bullpen. Reel struck out Bryan Smith, but Brian Patrick followed by ripping a Reel offering off the right center field wall to clear the bases.
The Bearcats offense produced six hits, including two by freshman Jack Nelson but again struggled in the clutch leaving 13 runners on base. The lone Cincinnati run of the day came courtesy of a Brad Schutz sacrifice fly in the third.
Duke added two more runs in the eighth inning off Bearcat reliever Mike Foley to expand the final five run cushion. Javier Socorro started off the frame with a double, followed by an Adam Murray single. After Murray stole second, Foley uncorked a wild pitch that allowed both runners to score.
Justin Minges got the start on the mound for the Bearcats and was solid allowing just one run and four hits in five innings. Zach Schreib picked up the win for Duke, allowing just one hit and one walk in three innings of work.
The Bearcats return to action next Friday, opening a four-game set at Winthrop. The series opens at 4 p.m. on the 14th and will follow with a doubleheader Saturday and single game Sunday.
