Steve Pickerell went 4 for 5 in game two against Vanderbilt |
NASHVILLE, Tenn.---The Cincinnati Bearcats recovered from a game one defeat by recording a season-high 14 hits en route to a 7-2 win over Vanderbilt in the conclusion of a three-game set Sunday at Hawkins Field. The Bearcats improve to 3-7 on the season, while Vanderbilt falls to 4-2.
Nate Bouldin earned his third win of the season for the Bearcats, as he went seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, with four strikeouts. Ryan Mullins was tagged with the loss for the Commodores and slips to 1-1 on the season.
After struggling offensively in the first game, the Bearcats came to life offensively in the nightcap, getting off to a great start on the strength of a three-run second inning. Drew Saylor reached on an error to start the frame and Brad Dorrmann and Justin Niefer followed with singles to pack the sacks. That brought Aaron Moll to the plate and he lined a two-run single to right center to give the Bearcats the lead. One out later, Mark Muscenti singled to plate Niefer.
Cincinnati got two more in the top of the fourth, the first coming on a Mullins balk. Steve Pickerell made his first hit as a Bearcat a good one as he ripped an RBI double down the left field line that scored another run.
Vanderbilt got on the board for the first time in the fifth when Ryan Klosterman yanked a Bouldin pitch over the left field wall for his first homer of the season.
The Bearcats would go on to add single runs in the sixth and eighth on a pair of RBI singles by Jon DeLuca. The Commodores rounded out the scoring with a John Kaye sacrifice fly off Bryan Wood in the last of the eighth.
Pickerell took a big step towards solidifying the catching position with a 4 for 5 day. Dorrmann, Muscenti and DeLuca all added two hits apiece for the Bearcats.
Vanderbilt answered a Bearcat run in the top of the second with a pair in the bottom of the frame and added another in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Hawkins Field. Cincinnati falls to 2-7 with the loss, while Vanderbilt improves to 4-1.
The Cincinnati offense sputtered throughout, as they could muster only four hits against four Vandy pitchers. Dorrmann had two of the four, while Saylor?s RBI double produced the Bearcats only run.
The Commodores trailed for only a short time as Warner Jones plated Worth Scott with the first run and Rucker Taylor added a second on an RBI groundout. Vanderbilt?s final run came courtesy of a Cesar Nicolas run-scoring double in the fifth inning.
Kyle Markle (0-3) was the hard luck again for Cincinnati as he yielded only seven hits and one walk in seven innings of work. Robert Ransom picked up the win for the Commodores, allowing just two hits and three walks with four strikeouts in six innings to score his first win of the season. Matt Buschman worked a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.
Cincinnati is set for its home opener next weekend when they are slated to host Toledo for a three-game set at Crosley Field in Blue Ash.
