BUIES CREEK, N.C.---Led by three golfers placing in the top-10, the University of Cincinnati men?s golf team earned a second place finish Tuesday at the Lonnie D. Small Intercollegiate, hosted by Campbell University. The women?s team was also in action at Campbell and placed fourth overall in the Fighting Camel Classic.
Senior Neil Lykins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) paced the men?s team with a seventh place finish, following a second day 79 to finish at 152. Freshman John Clodfelder (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) carded a career-best round of 73 in the final 18 holes to place eighth, just two strokes behind Lykins. Junior Chris Larbes (West Chester, Ohio/Moeller) rounded out the Bearcat finishers in the top 10, tying for the 10th position with a total of 156.
On the women?s side, senior Mandy Puckett (Farmland, Ind./Monroe Central) was the highest placing Bearcat, finishing tied for 14th with a two-day score of 167. Sophomore Allison Couch (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) tied for 17th (168), while senior Andrea Williams (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was tied for 20th (173).
In the team standings, Campbell ran away with the men?s competition, carding a winning score of 587. The Bearcats finished second with a team score of 626. In women?s action, Campbell was again the winner, with a total of 625, 20 strokes better than second place North Carolina State. The Bearcats were fourth with a two-round total of 689, trialing Gardner-Webb by 33 strokes.
The women?s team returns to competition next Monday and Tuesday, March 10-11 at the Lady Racer Classic in Murray, Ky. The men are idle until March 21-22 when they compete at the Eastern Kentucky Spring Intercollegiate.
