LEXINGTON, Ky.---A late run sunk the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-19) for the second day in a row as they dropped a 10-9 slugfest to Kentucky (11-17) on Wednesday night at UK?s Cliff Hagan Stadium.
With the game knotted at nine heading into the eighth inning, the Wildcats manufactured the game-winning run off of loser Mark Mueller (0-1). Caleb Stewart hit a ball deep into the hole at short that Brad Schutz gloved. But his throw to first was errant, giving Stewart second base. Jake Kungl laid down a bunt that moved the runner to third and Russ Rutherford?s sacrifice fly plated the winning run.
Seth Stanley (2-4) earned the win on the mound for UK, throwing two perfect inning to seal the win.
The Bearcats were led at the plate by Brad Dorrmann, who posted his second straight four-hit day, while also driving in three runs. Jake Smith added three hits and two RBI, while Aaron Moll went 2 for 4.
Cincinnati took a two-run advantage in the third inning, plating a pair against Rodriquez. Smith singled to lead off the frame and Jack Nelson walked. Mark Muscenti bunted both runners over, but Rordriquez, struck out Justin Niefer for the second out. Dorrmann was next and the senior lined his sixth consecutive base hit to right center to plate both runners.
The Bearcat lead didn?t last long, as the Wildcats exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame. All of the runs came via the long ball as both Mike Breyman and Kungl launched two-run shots off Mike Foley. After Kungl?s dinger, Foley struck out Russ Rutherford for the second out, but a walk to Justin Scutchfield brought Bryan Wood out of the Cincinnati pen in place of Foley. Wood put out the fire, getting Joe Naill to ground out to end the inning.
Cincinnati wouldn?t trail for long, though as 10 Bearcats came to the plate in the fourth inning, putting six runs on the board for an 8-4 lead. Smith, Muscenti, Niefer and Dorrmann all had RBI doubles in the inning, while Schutz added a run-scoring single and Nelson an RBI groundout.
Kentucky cut into the Bearcat lead with a pair of two-out runs in the fifth. After Wood struck out the first two hitters of the inning, Scutchfield and Naill both singled. That brought Casey Gilvin to the plate and he hit a fly ball to left that Smith couldn?t come up with for an error, allowing both runners to score and make it 8-6.
The Bearcats took a 9-6 lead in the seventh on Smith?s third hit of the night, an RBI double to right that scored Moll. But again the UC lead didn?t last long as Kentucky plated three runs in the seventh to knot the contest at nine. The Bearcats went through three pitchers in the frame, starting with Justin Minges who faced just two batters before being lifted in favor of Rob Reel. Reel gave up hits to three of the next four batters, including RBI singles by Brad Pickrell and Spencer Graeter, which brought Mueller to the mound.
Cincinnati returns to action on Friday opening a three-game home series with No. 29 Southern Miss. First pitch at Midland Field on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
