Anders Cedergren scored the Bearcats' first goal of the spring on Saturday.

CINCINNATI, Ohio---The Cincinnati men?s soccer team reached the finals of the spring-opening Ohio Cup, but the Bearcats came up just shy of a championship, falling to Dayton, 2-1 at Meyers Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats fell behind by two after a pair of first half Flyer goals. Tim Brown (Wellington, New Zealand/Victoria) scored the Bearcats lone marker of the contest, firing in a free kick from just outside the box early in the second half.

?We got the opportunity to play some good quality opponents today, but we weren?t as sharp as we would have liked to be with only one week of training,? said Bearcat head coach Hylton Dayes. ?We weren?t overly sharp in either game and against Dayton we got punished for it early on. But I thought we came back in the second half and that was a positive.?

Cincinnati scored a spot in the final on the strength of a 2-0 win over Wright State earlier in the day. Anders Cedergren (Solvesborg, Sweden/Furulundsskolan) got the scoring underway, heading in a Josh Gardner (Houston, Texas/Mayde Creek) corner kick. Wiremu Patrick (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington) added the Bearcats? second marker, chipping in a Justin Dobbs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) pass for a 2-0 lead.

?In the spring it?s a process for us,? Dayes said. ?We hope to continue getting sharper and continue progressing.?

The Bearcats return to spring soccer action on Wednesday, April 16 hosting the semi-pro Cincinnati Riverhawks at Meyers Field, beginning at 7 p.m.
