CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Former University of Cincinnati women?s soccer star Amy Simonson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) will continue her Bearcat career as an assistant coach on the UC staff. Simonson has been named to replace Becki Poeppelmeier as the top assistant to head coach Meridy Glenn.
?I am really excited about this great opportunity,? said Simonson. ?I think the strength that I bring to this team is that I know the team and I know what they need. Being around here for five years as a player, I think it will be a good transition from player to coach. Meridy is a great coach to play for and I am really excited to get to work with her in this new role.?
Simonson replaces Poeppelmeier on the staff after the latter left coaching at the end of January. She rounds out the UC staff that also includes part-time assistant Kate Berz.
?I am really psyched to have one of UC?s own joining our staff,? said Glenn. ?Amy definitely has the right attitude to make this transition and I am really looking forward to working with her this fall. I also think she will have a big impact on recruiting, especially in the Cincinnati-area and the rest of Ohio.?
Simonson wrapped up her playing career as a second team All-Conference USA and All-Great Lakes Region as a senior, leading the Bearcats to a second consecutive C-USA Tournament title and a spot in the NCAA Second Round. She finished her career tied for eighth in school history in career points (62) and goals (23), while ranking tied for seventh in assists (16).
