CINCINNATI, Ohio---Cincinnati?s potentially lethal outside hitter duo of junior Julie DuPont and sophomore Maria Pongonis were both stellar during an intrasquad scrimmage held Saturday evening in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center.
DuPont (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) tallied an event-high 29 kills, while Pongonis (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) hit for 27 in leading the offense during the evening. Pongonis also matched Lindsey Garrison (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) with a match-high 17 digs. DuPont added 14 digs to her kill total.
Both of the Bearcats setters were impressive as well. Returning starter Laura Lauder (Louisville, Ky./Presentation Academy) registered 60 assists and 14 digs, while freshman Noel Olson (Wheaton, Ill./St. Francis) added 33 while splitting time between setter and defense.
?I thought we competed hard tonight and are making good strides,? stated Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara. ?We are not there yet, but we are on our way. We are making good adjustments and I really like the competitiveness of this team. The leadership is there from the veterans on the team and the freshman are also a very vocal group that fit right in.?
The Bearcats open the 2003 season beginning Friday as they take part in the Patriot Invitational, held in Fairfax, Va. UC will kick off the campaign with a 12:30 matchup against Southwest Missouri State on Friday.
