DuPont Reaches Milestone In UC Win

FAIRFAX, Va.---Julie DuPont joined the 1,000 career kill club in leading the Cincinnati volleyball team to a three-game sweep over Fairfield on Saturday morning at the George Mason University Patriot Invitational.
DuPont tallied a match-high 14 kills to conclude the contest with an even 1,000 kills for her career, becoming just the ninth UC player ever to reach the milestone. She also added 10 kills for her third double-double of the tournament.
Junior Leslie Newell was also outstanding adding 13 kills on a .765 hitting percentage to help UC improve to 2-1 on the season. Rachel Torblaa tacked on 11 kills, hitting .526 in the win. Laura Lauder and Noel Olson both saw time at setter for the Bearcats, with Lauder accounting for 28 assists and a match-best 11 digs, while Olson tallied 12 assists.
The Stags? Casey Machon was the only Fairfield player to reach double figure kills with 11, while Laurie Brands added seven, along with 10 digs.
The Bearcats won the hitting war over Fairfield (0-2) by a whopping .424 to .121 margin. UC raced to a 30-24 win in the game one, hitting .300 to a .121 clip for the Stags. Game two was more of the same as Cincinnati took a 30-21 win, outhitting Fairfield .457 to .172. The Bearcats saved the best for last, taking game three 30-19 on the strength of a .583 percentage to just .069 for Fairfield.
?I thought we came out a little bit flat, but we picked it up,? said Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara. ?We did enough to win and I hope that we can carry that momentum into tonight?s match.?
The aforementioned evening match gets underway at 8 p.m. with UC facing the host Patriots.
